*Spoiler Beware*
Next Lich King

Okay. I know there has been a lot of discussion about who the next Lich King will be, but I am going to lay out the possibilities and the Logical answer.

So there are a couple people who could be the new Lich King. But firstly, I want to point out that the weapon Frostmourne isn’t what gains you the rank of the Lich King. Frostmourne is just a runeblade that the Lich King uses as a weapon to drain souls. Now what really grants the next Lich King that ranking is the helmet. As we’ve seen in cinematics before Arthas becomes the Lich King when he actually wears the Helmet. And as Arthas dies he uses his last ounce of energy trying to get the helmet. Take a look.

So now the possible candidates for the New Lich King.

Tirion Fordring is one, Highlord Bolvar Fordragon is another, and Darion Mograine.

Darion Mograine
People say that it is Darion because he is the leader of Ebon Blade and he now seeks to find a peaceful place for Death Knights to bask in and stay at peace. That Death Knight class needs to stay around in Cataclysm and if they don’t have a place in the story line then they won’t be continued in Cataclysm like they are. But! Others argue that the next Lich king can just as well provide this place or Death Knights can just continue as they are. It would just make more sense to have Darion as the Lich King for he is the only actual Death Knight Leader besides Arthas.

Tirion Fordring
So Tirion is an important person in the story line as well. Here we discuss that Tirion starts the Argent crusade venture to stop the Lich King. And if you pay attention in the Video below you will see that Tirion is a commanding figure who seems powerful enough to stop the Lich King as he portrays a strong challenge which makes the Lich King Flee.

Tirion says “you are a damned monster Arthas!”
Arthas respons “You were right Fordring, I did send them in to die (Darion and his Death Knights) Their Lives are meaningless, but yours…
Which is showing that Tirions life has importance to the Lich King. And as you see Darion Throws him the Ashbringer which could stop the Lich King.

Highlord Bolvar Fordragon
Now in my opinion I think that Bolvar is going to be the new Lich King! And here is why. In this video Highlord Bolvar is one of the few who is the first to vow to bring the Lich King to Justice. Thus making him someone who wants to stop all the evil doing Arthas has done. He seems like a good person to stop the Lich King and leave the story at a happy ending lol. Also lets get into more detail now. Highlord as we believe dies in the video for the cinematic at the Wrathgate against Arthas right? Well lets see.

As you see he clearly falls in the gas and gets burned by the fire as the dragons come at the end. But does he really die? NO!!!!! No he doesn’t people. Also we know that Saurfang dies at the gate too but he is brought back as a death knight but there is never any real mention as to where is or what happen to Bolvar. Also here is a picture of the Saurfang talk at the start of Icecrown Citadel fight that shows their plans to stop the Lich King and Save Bolvar. As Bolvar does yell as well signaling that he is alive!

You vote who you think would be the next Lich King. Or you can even comment on your ideas.

Winter Veil Achievement and Quest Concerns

Quote from: Zarhym (Source)

Posted by Syndri on the Customer Service forum: http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=22048397469&sid=1

We’re aware that many players have experienced difficulty completing the achievement “’Tis the Season” and the quest “Metzen the Reindeer.” While the Game Master department will not be in a position to grant credit for this achievement or quest, here are a few tips to help you complete them on your own.

‘Tis The Season

We’ve received many reports of players not receiving the “Tis’ the Season” achievement despite meeting the listed requirements (eating Graccu’s Mince Meat Fruitcake with 3 pieces of Winter Clothing equipped), and this is most often related to “broken” Winter Clothing.

To ensure that you are able to receive this achievement, please check the durability of your Winter Clothing and repair any broken pieces prior to eating Graccu’s Mince Meat Fruitcake. If any pieces of equipped Winter Clothing are broken at the time that Graccu’s Mince Meat Fruitcake is eaten, you will not be eligible for the “’Tis the Season” achievement.

Metzen the Reindeer

We’ve also received a number of reports that Smokywood Satchels do not always include a Pouch of Reindeer Dust if received while in a raid group. Unfortunately, without the Pouch of Reindeer Dust, the quest “Metzen the Reindeer” cannot be completed.

To guarantee that your Smokywood Satchel contains both Metzen’s Letters and Notes and the Pouch of Reindeer dust, please make sure that you are not in a raid group when you accept this quest. If you have this quest in your log currently but are unable to complete it due to the missing quest item, please abandon the quest and accept it again while not in a raid group.

World Of Warcraft Movie Contest
Looking forward to seeing the winners for such a contest. Lots of creative people will probably be competing with each other. I can’t wait to see the videos created.

Can we get cross-realm raids? (Source)

Doing this is a bit more complicated than the 5 player dungeons. For 5 player dungeons it’s not a big deal to allow the random heroics to skip lock outs and is not very hard to setup a group. We obviously can’t skip lockouts for raids and it just much more common for raids to not complete all of the content, so you could come back a few days later and find someone else cleared your instance. It’s definitely something that sounds good in theory but there are a lot of issues that we would have to figure out first.

Bryntroll proc does more damage than Scourge Strike (Source)

Because we removed the passive stats to add the procs to some weapons in Icecrown we were a little more generous with what they could do to keep them interesting/fun even if a lot of players felt they would be terrible without the passive stats. The Nibelung staff can proc a lot of Val’kyr so this isn’t a Bryntroll/melee specific topic.

Just to avoid surprises, procs like this are the kind of thing you will likely see a lot more of in order for gear to not to feel so predictable and boring from tier to tier.

As far as the PvP concerns, the classes that can use this weapon were already quite popular so we are keeping an eye on things and see if any noticeable impact happens on them.

Why can’t we skip the lore in Culling of Stratholme? (Source)

This is something we’d like to do and we may do it in the future, but it’s not something to expect just over the horizon. This kind of change would require a fairly large technical overhaul of our existing dungeons. When it comes down to it, we’d rather have the story in the game for those who want to see it and work on making it something that you can bypass at a later date.

With Trial of the Champion. we were already aware of the potential issue. We were able to plan for that instance, specifically, to have a dialog option to opt out of the Role-playing portion. Additionally, there are specific character movements that make the issue more complicated in the Culling of Stratholme events.

Is stamina stacking important for tanks now? (Source)

The general issue (from a player perspective) is that dodges and parries don’t work very well against spells. Melee damage is large part of the damage that a tank takes, but there are spells out there and having higher health allows you to take those situations just as well as the high melee situations.

Is anyone else tired of how easy raids are now? (Source)

We see posts like this from time to time but they tend to not include any compelling argument. Nostalgia is powerful. In a game that has been out this long there can be a lot of great memories of the past that you would relish to relive again. We understand this, but, the game continues to move forward and changes are made to benefit the entire playerbase.

As opposed to the old systems of years ago, the current raiding content is more accessible to more people. Yes, this is a good thing. The way emblems reward items also allow more players to be on the same or similar levels of gear and help minimize/avoid the “I’m in max gear and smash all faces” scenarios that force players to start from the very beginning raid content no matter how progressed the content patches are.

For players who are only satisfied by beating the highest level content and the most challenging encounters, the hard modes are available. Encounters like Yogg-0 and Anub’arak 25 are no joke. Then, the Lich King awaits (behind his walls).

Do players try to “pad” the meters? (Source)

I don’t think it’s that players are necessarily trying to pad the meters (though I’m sure that does happen). I think the risk is misinterpreting “highest damage ever” as some kind of metric of how *you* do in your raid. The goal here is not to break the world record and win a gold medal. The goal is to defeat the boss, and it’s probably a boss you are going to be fighting week after week. Consistency is generally more important than occasionally achieving huge numbers.

Consider two players below:

Player A has a damage range of 8000 to 12,000 dps. His average is 10,000 dps and 90% of the time he is near 10,000 dps. When the stars align, he can reach 12,000 dps. He sometimes drops to 8000 dps too.

Player B has a damage range of 10,000 to 11,500 dps. His average is 10,750 dps, but he still hits 11,500 quite often.

Now who would you rather have with you? Probably B. Yet when you look at a “Highest damage ever” list, you’ll see A pegged at 12K and B pegged at 11.5K and worry that “A wins.”

Why were starting items messed with in 3.3? (Source)

Changes like this happened to avoid confusion for players starting the game. While leveling with a sword and shield is possible, in a lot of ways it is easier to level with a two-handed weapon and … well… many players feel more awesome that way.

Interesting Speculation

Here is the Video of the Cutscene for the Horde.

Sylvanas – I… I don’t believe it! Frostmourne stands before us, unguarded! Just as the Gnome claimed. Come, heroes!
Sylvanas – Standing this close to the blade that ended my life… And the pain… It is renewed!
Sylvanas – I dare not touch it. Stand back! Stand back! As I attempt to commune with the blade. Perhaps our salvation lies within.
Uther – Careful, girl! I’ve heard talk of that cursed blade saving us before. Look around you, and see what has been born of Frostmourne!
Sylvanas- Uther! Uther the Light Bringer! How…
Uther – You haven’t much time. The Lich King sees what the sword sees. He will be here shortly!
Sylvanas – The Lich King is here? Then my destiny shall be fulfilled on this day!
Uther – You cannot defeat the Lich King! Not here. You would be a fool to try! He will kill those that follow you and raise them as powerful soldiers of the scourge! But for you, Sylvanas. His reward for you will be worst than the last.
Sylvanas – There must be a way!
Uther – Perhaps, but know this. There must always be a Lich King. Even if you were to strike down Arthas, another would have to take his place. For without the control of the Lich King, the scourge would wash over the world like locusts, destroying all that they touched.
Sylvanas – Who could bear such a burden?
Uther – I do not know, banshee queen. I suspect that the piece of Arthas that might be left inside the Lich King is all that holds the scourge from annihilating Azeroth.
Uther – Alas, the only way to defeat the Lich King is to destroy him at the place where he was created.
Sylvanas – The Frozen Throne!
Uther – I… Aargh… He… He is coming… You… You must…
Sylvanas – You will not escape me that easily, Arthas! I will have my vengeance.
Sylvanas – He’s… Too powerful! Heroes, quickly, come to me! We must leave this place at once! I will do what I can to hold him in place while we flee.
Sylvanas – There’s an opening up ahead. Go, now!
Sylvanas – We’re almost there, don’t give up!
Sylvanas – Blasted, dead end! So this is how it ends. Prepare yourselves heroes, for today we make our final stand!
Sylvanas – We are safe, for now. His strength has increased ten-fold since our last battle! It will take a mighty army to destroy the Lich King, an army greater than even the Horde can rouse.
Sylvanas – Champions, to my aid! Keep the Lich Kings scourge from interfering, and I shall break down this barrier!
Sylvanas – No wall can hold the banshee queen! Keep the undead at bay heroes, I will tear this barrier down!
Sylvanas – Another barrier? Stand strong, champions! I will bring the wall down!
Sylvanas – I grow tired of these games, Arthas! Your walls can’t stop me!
Sylvanas – You won’t impede our escape, fiend. Keep the undead off me while I bring this barrier down!

Notice that uther mentions that there must always be a lich king no matter what. Also that If it wasn’t for The Lich King the scourge would wipe out the world pretty much. Then Uther goes on to mention that it is the small piece of Arthas inside the Lich King that is keeping the scourge from completely annihilating Azeroth. So if you think about it, even though Arthas has done all these bad things, he is doing the greater good deed by not allowing the scourge to reign of Azeroth and completely destroying it.

Pretty interesting stuff just thought I would share with you guys!

Here is a Q&A with a good round of questions. Some answer questions about Cataclysm and is mostly based on how the game will be for the future. Very interesting read so check it out! =)

Quote from: Blizzard (Source)

Are there any plans to increase the starting level of new characters, similar to starting from level 55 as a death knight?

No, there are no plans at this time to allow new characters to start at a higher level. However, it’s always possible for future Hero classes.

What can we expect from the art design for item sets in the Cataclysm expansion? Many items appeared identical in Trial of the Grand Crusader.

With the Trial of the Crusader, as well as Trial of the Grand Crusader, we wanted to introduce faction-specific art, and this was the perfect opportunity to do so, given the purpose, story-wise of what this instance was about. That said, with Icecrown Citadel we’re returning to how we’ve handled tier sets in the past, providing unique class-specific art. As we create the items for Cataclysm, we’ll certainly take into account how each of these approaches has been received.

Is it possible to add a car racing mini-game to Shimmering Flats in Thousand Needles?

Mini-games are something that we’re certainly interested in adding to the game, and continue to discuss on a regular basis, but we don’t have any plans to announce just yet.

Will additional methods of obtaining PvP items be introduced in the future?

There are currently several methods of obtaining PvP items. It’s worth noting that one thing we are working on for Cataclysm is improving the availability for starter PvP sets.

Will improvements be made to the current social features, such as a marriage system or an improved guild system?

We are currently working on a guild system revamp for Cataclysm, and will continue to make improvements to the social features of the game.

Why do goblins seem to have better racial abilities than worgen?

The new racial abilities are still in the process of being balanced and reviewed. Don’t be surprised if changes are made to any of the racial abilities before Cataclysm is released.

Some players like to collect many sets of items, but the current bank slots are just not enough. Are there plans to add a wardrobe feature to the bank, to help players store their item sets?

This is something that we’re currently looking into and would like to implement at some point in the future.

With the constant danger of account theft, would it be possible to implement a password lock to the bank?

If the account itself is compromised, it’s likely that any additional passwords such as a password lock to the bank would be compromised as well. Good security habits, such as being careful about downloading programs or visiting suspicious sites, as well as the use of the Battle.net Authenticator, are more effective measures than an additional password would be, and we highly encourage all players to apply them. With that said, account security is a top priority for us and we are constantly working on additional security measures.

In past expansions, the level cap was raised by 10 levels each time. However, the level cap will only be increased by 5 levels with the Cataclysm expansion. Why is that?

For Cataclysm, a lot of work will be put into redesigning the level 1-60 play experience as well as adding new content for max-level players. In addition, with the Cataclysm expansion we are also working on alternate methods of character progression, such as the Path of the Titans and guild levels and guild talents.

Will there be more quests that require cooperation from both factions in the future, such as the Ahn’Qiraj gate event?

Currently, there aren’t any plans to do so; one of our goals with Cataclysm is to bring the “war” back to Warcraft through a variety of ways, all of which we’re very excited about.

Will there be more heirloom items in the Cataclysm expansion?

Yes, definitely. Our long-term goal is to implement heirloom items for most, if not every item slot.

Are there plans to improve the in-game voice chat system?

Yes, we definitely want to improve upon the current in-game voice chat system and already have plans to do so.

Will there be flying mounts that could take passengers in the future?

This is something we are planning on adding at some point in the future.

Will it be possible to add an “instance spectator” mode to the game?

This is a feature that we would like to add for both raids and Arenas in the future.

What is the next new class for World of Warcraft?

You’re just going to have to wait and see!

In-Game Fixes – December 17th, 2009
Last night there were a few more hotfixes applied to the live realms, including a ‘nerf’ (that could also be considered a bug fix) to Sweeping Strikes and how it interacts with Bladestorm.
Yesterday there were a few fixes made to the live realms. One of which included a nerf to sweeping strikes and how it interacts with bladestorm for the warrior class.

Quote from: Blizzard (Source)

12/17/09

  • Everlasting Affliction can now refresh the duration of Corruption on a target when the Warlock casts Drain Soul.
  • Sweeping Strikes will now only trigger once per whirlwind rotation of Bladestorm.
  • Players will now receive appropriate credit for the Full House achievement.

New Euro Realms & Free Character Transfers
There were a couple new player realms added for european players, also along with this comes an opportunity to server change your character to a different realm for free, just thought you guys would like to hear it just in case some of you wanted to switch realms. =)

New Player realms
Normal/PvE: Terokkar
PvP: Karazhan
RP: Darkmoon Faire
RP PvP: Sporeggar

Free Character Migration (FCM)
The below FCM is available until December the 22nd. All migrations are faction restricted to improve ratios on involved realms, thus your faction is currently the less populated one on the destination realm.

From: Argent Dawn
To: Darkmoon Faire and The Sha’tar

Alliance only:
From: Ravencrest and Sylvanas
To: Auchindoun, Karazhan and Shattered Halls

Horde only:
From: Draenor
To: Nagrand and Terokkar

Please note: FCM is opened based on realm population tracking and analysis, not by request. If you’re looking for a specific migration (from realm A to realm B), you are in most cases better off using Paid Character Transfer, or you could end up waiting for a very long time.

On stationary fights, what class should do the best DPS? (Source)

To be honest, I’m not sure the answer to that question would be very helpful. You stipulate when skill, gear, latency, raid comp and everything else is equal and you stipulate a tank and spank fight with no movement, adds or other considerations. Those two situations are going to be virtually impossible to ever encounter in the actual game, so the information isn’t that useful anyway except to know where we’re coming from philosophically.

On the other hand, it carries some amount of gunk-up-the-forums risk. If we said night elf rogues and blacksmith Shadow priests are designed to be the best in those situations, I am fairly certain we would see posts for the next several months that say “I play a blacksmith Shadow priest and this is supposed to be the fight I win, which I am not, so please buff.”

My suggestion is to worry more about how to improve your individual dps, which you can almost certainly do, and less about whether you’re being held back by class mechanics, which you have very little control over.

If you want an answer to the actual question, I would look at those classes and specs whose mechanics benefit from stationary, single targets.

Top DPS lists (Source)

Be careful how you analyze those “highest dps ever” lists.

1) Highest dps ever does not mean those results are reproducible. Most players would rather do consistently high damage all of the time than ridiculously high damage once under a blue moon. You can’t just look at those “scoreboards” and get a feel for what the average rogue does, just because 50 of them (or whatever the number is) can squeeze out some impressive numbers when they get lucky / the stars align.

2) It’s unfortunately going to be a few weeks before all the pre-nerf Mutilate and Unholy parses get watered down by the post-nerf numbers.

Weapon proc enchants for casters (Source)

We recognize that weapon enchants (and even weapons in general) aren’t as exciting for casters and healers specifically as they are for melee. Procs are certainly one way to address that problem, and it’s something we’re taking a hard look at. As several players have pointed out though, they aren’t trivial to design. Proc’ing damage is generally useful for a damage-dealer. Proc’ing a heal is unreliable at best and often just wasted.

Player versus Player

The PvP gearing system and how it compares to PvE’s version (Source)

The PvP gearing system is actually pretty similar to the PvE gearing system. If you’re awesome, you have access to the best gear. If you’re not as awesome, *or* if you’re new, then you don’t have access to that gear, but you have access to the gear just a tier behind. Next season you’ll have access to the new gear, but the better players will have access to even better gear, and so on.

Yes, you’re going to have more of a challenge competing against players with the best gear, but it’s not an insurmountable advantage and the system won’t completely starve you of the ability to get the best gear even if you lose a lot.

Rated BGs are not designed to give players who just want to lose their way through a bunch of battlegrounds Gladiator-level loot. They’re designed for players who don’t like the small, short, duel-ish feeling of Arena but still like coordinated, competitive play. (I also expect there will be a lot of overlap between the two.) If rated BGs aren’t for you or you just can’t compete for some reason, you still have access to the previous season’s gear (and you can even get it through PvE progression).

Classes

Death Knight

Are DK talent trees “dull”? (Source)

DK trees are a little unusual because they lack a lot of the “reduces cost” or “reduces cooldown” talents that most every other spec has.

Warrior

Sweeping Strikes and Bladestorm: Is it worth using it while Bladestorm is up? (Source)

We are in fact keeping the interaction. SS will still be worth hitting when Bladestorm is up. What it will not do is hit one target 4 (or in some cases even more) times. The stand alone ability Whirlwind had this bullet-proofing as part of the spell, but the new whirlwinds created as part of Bladestorm did not. We think this is one of the main causes of the “Bladestorm blowed me up” feedback.

Deathbringer Saurfang Fixes
There were a few blue posts about Deathbringer Saurfang and how the next patch might make him a bit more challenging in certain situations.

Quote from: Daelo (Source)

Deathbringer Saurfang’s Rune of Blood has been modified to heal 10 times the amount of damage dealt instead of 5 times the damage. This will make the encounter more difficult if you try to tank Saurfang with just one character. The tooltip does not reflect this change, but it will in a future patch.

  • Players with the quest “Wrath of the Lich King” will now properly receive quest credit.
  • Muradin and Saurfang will no longer gain stacks of Battlefury from totems. Additionally, the duration of Battlefury has also been reduced.
  • Lord Marrowgar is now tauntable.
  • The Looking For Group item level requirement for Halls of Reflection has been raised to match the difficulty of the encounters.

Wintergrasp Changes

Quote from: Bornakk (Source)

We wanted to address some of the confusion we often see regarding the Battle for Wintergrasp. We will not provide exact details on how the system works to try and avoid abuse of the mechanics, but there is a system in place that can change how the battle plays out.

When one faction defends more than the other, the system will give advantages like the ability to use catapults or siege tanks faster to the faction that is on the offensive. On realms where one faction is often able to defend the fortress and the other faction rarely defends, the system tries to help this balance by providing bonuses to the faction that rarely succeeds at defending.

Some questions are cleared up
I guess there was some confusion on how loot system works in the Dungeon Finder system. So here is some information and feedback from blizzard regarding the way it works. Now with all this being said, the question is, do you like the way it is, and has your experience with it been a good one?

Quote from: Bornakk (Source)

There has been some confusion regarding looting items when using the new Dungeon Finder system so we would like to take a moment and provide an explanation for some of these new features.

Anytime players are matched up with other players using the Dungeon Finder system, the looting option is automatically set to “Need Before Greed” which is designed to be a fair system that rewards items to the classes they are designed for. While there can be some finer details on how this works, here is an overview on this system:

  • The “need” option is only available for both armor and weapons that are designed for your class. Caster classes and hybrid caster classes can roll “need” on items with intellect and/or spell power while melee classes cannot. Melee classes and hybrid melee classes can roll “need” on the items without intellect and/or spell power. There is an additional restriction that only allows characters to roll for armor items if it’s the armor type that is designed for their class. So since cloth armor is designed for mages, priests, and warlocks only they can roll “need” on these armor types. Then leather armor is for druids and rogues, mail armor for hunters and shaman, and plate for death knights, paladins, and warriors. Keep in mind that these restrictions only apply to items above a certain item level since the breakdown of stats is very different in the early leveling area of the game.
  • We also introduced a “disenchant” option that is open to all classes on all items whenever a player with the sufficient level of skill in enchanting is in the group to disenchant the item that just dropped. If the winner of the item has selected this option the item will automatically be disenchanted and the resulting material(s) placed in the character’s bags instead of the item. Just like it was before the patch, disenchanting any item is not reversible and the item is permanently removed so you should only select this option if you have no plans to use the item or trade it to another player.
  • The “greed” option is open to all classes and all item types but the players who roll greed will also roll against those who select disenchant. The reason for this is that if an item is not a high priority and/or eligible to be rolled “need” on, then other players running the dungeon have an equal chance to get a reward for defeating the encounter.

As far as how the whole Dungeon Finder system works, it matches up characters with others in their entire Battlegroup instead of just their individual realm. Once a dungeon is completed players go back to their respective realms where they cannot communicate or trade with players on other realms, so any items you gained in the dungeon can no longer be traded to another character in the group. If you are considering giving an item to another player, you must do so before either character leaves the dungeon.

We appreciate all of the feedback from the community so far and we will continue to monitor and resolve any questions or issues as they come up.

Here are two big updates and changes made for Patch 3.3. One is for Battered Hilt, The other is In-game fixes.
Battered Hilt Drop Rate fixed

Quote from: Zarhym (Source)

Based on feedback we’ve been provided by players, we’d like to make you aware of a couple of changes we are applying to Icecrown Citadel: The Frozen Halls via in-game fixes. Firstly, we are increasing the drop rate of the Battered Hilt in all three wings of this Heroic five-player dungeon. We have seen a great deal of discussion about this item’s chance of dropping since the release of patch 3.3.0 and agree that it is currently too low. As a result, players should find greater accessibility to this item while running these dungeons, or while trading with other players who have it.

In light of this change, we are also removing the chance for the Battered Hilt or any other epic item to drop from the Skeletal Slaves in the Pit of Saron. The need to “farm” these creatures for the Battered Hilt should be reduced by our first in-game fix and will no longer result in a chance for epic loot or Battered Hilts.

You’re welcome to discuss these changes in this thread and provide us with any additional feedback you may have. Please refrain from creating additional threads about these in-game fixes at this time.
